Commission to Harden Lake Ontario Shore Against Future Floods

Governor Cuomo has announced formation of a commission that will look at the flooding situation along Lake Ontario and decide how New York should respond to it.

The Lake Ontario Resiliency and Economic Development initiative...or REDI...is supposed to do two things: plan to harden the lakeshore infrastructure to resist floodwaters, and strengthen local economies that are highly dependent on summer tourism.

The governor says he doesn't want to see a lot of money spent on rebuilding lakeshore communities only to have another flood sweep in and undo it all, as is happening now to the rebuilding done since 2017. Cuomo says if high water levels on Lake Ontario are the "new normal," then we need a different type of shoreline development.

The commission will tour and examine areas that are hard hit by flooding and work to make them more resilient to high water.
