An Irondequoit man who died in 2017 while helping to save a drowning boy is getting a posthumous Carnegie Medal for heroism. Jason Sigelow swam out to save nine-year-old Jose Cruz-Gonzalez, as the boy was swept by the current into deep water at the Irondequoit Bay Outlet. A Connecticut man, Philip Orzech, saw Sigelow struggling with the boy and also swam out to help. He also was awarded the Carnegie Medal.
The presentation ceremony was held last night at Irondequoit Town Hall.
The Carnegie Medal is awarded to Americans and Canadians who risk their lives to an extraordinary degree to try to save others.
