Rochester, NY -- Two students at St. John Fisher College are apologizing for damaging one of the statues of abolitionist Frederick Douglass that were placed around the city to commemorate his 200th birthday. Police say the statue was damaged when the two men removed it from its pedestal on Tracy Street, off Alexander Street, shortly after midnight Sunday morning.
Police caught 20-year-old John Boedicker (left), of Endicott, and 21-year-old Charles Milks (right) , of Kenmore, as they carried the statue away. Both men were charged with criminal mischief.
Fisher has released a statement saying "This behavior goes against who we are and who we strive to be. We share the outrage that members of the Rochester community feel about this incident."
