State Senator Joe Robach says he wants the state to bring back the flagpoles along area expressways that were taken down last week. He is contacting the state transportation department to make it happen.
The state said says the poles had "rigging and lighting issues" and could not properly fly the U.S. flag. And the state says it would be too dangerous for veterans groups, or others, to take over maintenance of the poles.
Monroe County Executive Cheryl Dinolfo is also calling on the state bring back the flagpoles. She released the following statement today:
“Like residents and families across Monroe County, I was appalled by New York State’s decision to remove the American flags that welcome visitors to our community along I-490. I spoke with several veterans’ groups over the weekend and I share their frustration that this move was made without notice and just before Monroe County will host a statewide American Legion convention this week. In order to right this wrong, I contacted the Director of NYSDOT Region 4 this morning to express that I am joining Senator Joe Robach’s call for the flags to be replaced in some form no later than Thursday. I also offered Monroe County’s assistance, should NYSDOT need it, and I am hopeful that a positive resolution will be reached soon.”
