New York yogurt and cheese makers produce millions of pounds each year of a byproduct known as acid whey. Some gets mixed into animal feed, but most gets trucked away for safe disposal. New York Senator Chuck Schumer is proposing a 30 percent federal tax credit for the producers to install biodigesters at their plants that will turn the byproduct into methane gas. Schumer says that could be a significant energy source plus revenue now that Greek-style yogurt is such a booming business in New York.
Senator Schumer says producers who buy in can save the waste disposal costs and use the gas to heat their buildings.
