Mayor seeks answers on housing border-crossing kids in Rochester

Posted July 22nd, 2014 @ 5:33pm by Bud Lowell

Rochester's mayor says she met with her senior staff to discuss possible use of the shuttered Blossom South nursing home to house illegal immigrant children....and they've decided they just don't have enough information to make a decision either way.

Mayor Lovely Warren has issued a statement saying they are pushing for answers, particularly on who handles the children's health and safety if they come to Rochester. Warren says she also wants specifics on what overall impacts, if any, it would have on the city.

The mayor's office was contacted by the owner of the Blossom South building about possibly using it to house 172 of the children who are in federal custody after coming across the Mexican border.

Mayor Warren has already asked the Upper Monroe Neighborhood Association to collect opinions from its members. She says fact-finding will mean discussions with neighborhood groups, City Council, community and faith-based organizations before she makes any decision about opening up the Rochester community to these children.
