Thunderstorms slow down rush hour

Intense thunderstorms moved across Monroe County during rush hour -- cutting power to about 5,000 area residents and slowing traffic out of downtown Rochester to a standstill.


Rochester Gas and Electric says most of the outages are in Ontario and Monroe Counties -- with Ontario County the hardest hit.


Numerous lightning strikes and downed power lines kept fire companies busy.


A house was struck by lightning and set on fire on the 1000 block of Palmer Road in Riga. At least three fire companies responded fighting the blaze.


We have reports of trees down and power lines arcing at several places in Irondequoit, including Wyndale Road and Hillhurst Lane.


Police report a power outage along Jay Street on the West Side of Rochester -- traffic lights are out at several intersections including Jay and Glide Street.
