Rochester, N.Y. – Jury deliberations are set to begin in the trial of two people charged in the death of a high school teacher who was hit by their vehicles while riding her bicycle on Route 250 in Penfield.
Deliberations began early Monday morning in the cases of 23-year-old Mark Scerbo of Penfield and 24-year-old Meagan Merkel of Ontario, Wayne County. Both are charged with manslaughter and driving while intoxicated.
Police say they hit 40-year-old Heather Boyum of Perinton with their vehicles last July in Penfield. Boyum was a teacher at Fairport High School.
Merkel and Scerbo were tried together but have separate juries. Before deliberation begins, jurors will hear closing arguments for Scerbo. Closing arguments for Merkel were heard on Friday.
