State Comptroller Finds Millions Of Dollars Sitting Idle

(AP) Albany N.Y.- The New York Comptroller's Office says more than $14 million from tax return check-offs, most intended for health-related causes like cancer research, has been sitting in accounts for years without being spent for the intended purposes.

Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli says in a report Wednesday that New Yorkers have contributed more than $51 million to eight possible causes since the state program was created in 1982 to support New York's conservation fund.

The report says that from $12 million designated to six funds during the last five years, only $5.1 million, or 43 percent, has been spent.

That includes no spending from $2.9 million meant to support prostate cancer research and $500,000 in the fund to support volunteer firefighting and EMS services that was established in 2009.
