Dozens of police officers were called to the Frederick Douglass campus today after fights broke out between groups of students at the Northeast and Northwest High Schools.
While staff were breaking up an incident in the cafeteria just after 1 p.m. a fire alarm went off. Police say it was caused by a malfunction, not triggered by a student. But the effect was to move the fight outside where police and District Security broke it up. Some students were hit with pepper spray and were seen by the school nurse.
All students were back in class before 1:30 and were put on lock in for the final two periods. School was dismissed normally without any further trouble.
The school district says all parents were notified by automated phone calls, and the parents of students involved in the fighting have been contacted. Those students face discipline from the school.
