Rochester, N.Y. – The city of Rochester could get its first state historical site. The Shantz Button Factory is one of only two surviving early 20th century button manufacturing plants from the once-thriving clothing industry in Rochester.

The factory was built along the Erie Canal, when it originally passed through downtown, and is one of 16 sites recommended by the state Board of Historic Preservation to be considered to the State and National Registers of historic places.

The recommendations are awaiting approval by the state historic preservation officer. If approved for listing ,the now State Street brewery,  will be eligible for various public preservation programs and services. These services include matching state grants and state and federal historic rehabilitation tax credits.
