Livingston County Undersheriff Jim Szczesniak says he's retiring after 28 years with the Livingston County Sheriff's Office.

Szczesniak lost a hotly contested election to Republican Thomas Dougherty earlier this month and he says the department can only have one leader. The undersheriff says now it's time to move on and look for new opportunities in his future. He says he doesn't know yet what those might be.

Szczesniak was the Conservative party candidate in the election to replace Sheriff John York, who also retires at the end of the year. Dougherty was the Republican.
