Gates police ID drowning victim

Posted June 29th, 2014 @ 7:42am by Bud Lowell

Gates Police have identified the man who drowned last week in the Erie Canal as 21-year-old Christopher James of Rochester.

James and a group of friends dropped into the canal from a bridge near Chili Avenue to cool off on Thursday afternoon. He went down and didn't come up. Divers from the Gates Fire Department found his body about 45 minutes later.

Police caution the canal is a bad place for swimming. It's deep and the high rock walls along the Rochester-Gates border make it hard to get out.
