Congel fires back over Medley Centre

Congel fires back over Medley Centre

The owner of the Medley Centre has responded to Irondequoit's "get tough" approach by accusing the town of playing politics.

Town officials went to court Thursday evening and had Bersin Properties and owner Scott Congel cited for having an inactive sprinkler system and storing flammable materials in the vacant mall.

Supervisor Adam Bello said they went forward after not getting an adequate response from Congel, and that Irondequoit will not be ignored after investing taxpayer money into Congel’s plans to redevelop the mall.

The town demanded on Monday that Congel fix the violations by Wednesday or be summoned into court. They released pictures showing water damage inside the mall caused by frozen and burst pipes.

Congel did fire back in a letter today. He accused Bello of running for office by vilifying him, and said Bello is getting in the way of his efforts to develop jobs and tax base for Irondequoit. Congel also wrote that town officials have refused his phone calls and efforts to communicate.

Supervisor Bello says he’s not aware of ever refusing a call from a Bersin Properties official.

Congel also accuses Bello of forcing delays in a meeting he tried to set up between town officials, labor and banks to address the project.
